Historical Information

Venezuelan military aviation traces its origins to 1920, when the Aviación Militar Venezolana was established. It became an independent air service on June 22, 1946, and subsequently developed into a modern force equipped with aircraft from the United States, Britain, France, and later Russia. Venezuelan Naval Aviation was established separately during the 1960s to support fleet operations, maritime patrol, anti-submarine warfare, transport, and reconnaissance.

The Venezuelan Air Force adopted its familiar modern roundel in 1956. The marking consists of concentric yellow, blue, and red circles with horizontal yellow-blue-red bars extending from both sides, producing a distinctive roundel-and-bar design. Earlier versions lacked the horizontal bars.

Venezuelan Naval Aviation uses a separate roundel consisting of concentric yellow, blue, and red circles without the Air Force-style horizontal bars. This simpler naval marking has appeared on aircraft such as the Bell AB-212 and Grumman S-2 Tracker, along with other Venezuelan naval helicopters and maritime aircraft.

Over the decades, Venezuelan Air Force markings have appeared on aircraft including the F-86 Sabre, English Electric Canberra, F-5, Mirage III/V, Mirage 50, OV-10 Bronco, F-16 Fighting Falcon, and later Russian-built aircraft such as the Su-30MK2. Naval Aviation markings have appeared on maritime patrol aircraft, transports, and shipborne helicopters supporting the Venezuelan fleet.
