These 1-300 USAF Star and Bar Low Visibility Mid Gray decals reproduce the American national aircraft insignia in a subdued mid-gray finish. The reduced-contrast marking is designed for modern U.S. Air Force aircraft painted in light gray tactical schemes where a black or full-color insignia would appear too prominent.
As U.S. combat aircraft moved toward increasingly subdued camouflage during the later Cold War, national insignia and other external markings were modified to reduce their visibility. The traditional star-and-bar shape was retained, but the colors were replaced by monochrome gray, black, or other low-contrast tones selected to suit the surrounding aircraft finish.
Mid-gray insignia are particularly appropriate for aircraft finished in light gray and multi-gray tactical schemes. On darker gray or camouflage finishes, a darker or lighter marking may provide the more historically accurate contrast, so photographs of the individual aircraft are recommended whenever possible.
Representative aircraft for subdued gray national insignia include the F-15 Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, A-10 Thunderbolt II, and other USAF tactical aircraft that carried low-visibility markings during the 1980s, 1990s, and modern era.
This sheet is printed in a specialty mid-gray ink intended to remain visible on lighter gray airframes without creating the strong contrast of a black marking. For darker aircraft finishes, the separate black-and-white low-visibility sheet may be more appropriate.
