These 1-300 USAF Low Visibility Star & Bar decals provide subdued versions of the American national aircraft insignia in white and black. The sheet is intended for modern aircraft finished in low-visibility camouflage schemes where the traditional full-color red, white, and blue insignia would appear too prominent.
By the late Cold War, U.S. tactical aircraft were increasingly painted in gray, wraparound camouflage, and other reduced-visibility finishes. National insignia, warning markings, unit codes, and service titles were correspondingly subdued to reduce visual contrast while still meeting identification requirements.
The familiar star-and-bar shape remained unchanged, but it could be rendered in black, white, gray, or other contrasting monochrome colors depending on the aircraft finish. This sheet provides both black and white options, allowing the modeler to choose the version that gives the correct contrast against a particular camouflage scheme.
Low-visibility national insignia became especially common on tactical aircraft during the 1980s and later. Representative USAF subjects include the A-10 Thunderbolt II, F-4 Phantom II, F-15 Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-111 Aardvark, and other aircraft carrying subdued operational markings.
