Historical Information

1-300 Decals USA White Star & Bar Blue Outline 1943-1947

These 1-300 USA White Star & Bar Blue Outline decals reproduce the standard American national aircraft insignia used from the second half of 1943 through early 1947. The marking combined a white five-pointed star on a blue circular field with white horizontal bars and an Insignia Blue outline.

The star-and-bar shape had first appeared in June 1943 with a red border. Because the red outline was considered undesirable in combat theaters, Army-Navy specifications were amended on August 14, 1943 to replace it with blue. Field orders followed, and the blue-outline version became the standard marking seen on American aircraft during the later years of World War II.

This insignia was carried by aircraft of the U.S. Army Air Forces, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Marine Corps across Europe, the Mediterranean, the Pacific, China-Burma-India, and other theaters. On very dark Navy finishes, variations existed in which some blue portions were reduced or omitted for visibility.

Representative aircraft included the P-38 Lightning, P-47 Thunderbolt, P-51 Mustang, F6F Hellcat, F4U Corsair, TBF/TBM Avenger, B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator, B-25 Mitchell, and B-29 Superfortress.

The blue-outline star-and-bar remained standard after World War II until January 14, 1947, when red horizontal stripes were added inside the white bars. That change produced the familiar red, white, and blue national insignia that continued into the U.S. Air Force era.
