Historical Information

The modern UAE was established in 1971, but its military aviation heritage developed from the separate air arms maintained by individual emirates. Abu Dhabi established an air arm during the late 1960s, while Dubai developed its own military aviation capability during the early 1970s.

In 1976, the separate Abu Dhabi and Dubai aviation organizations were brought together as part of the developing armed forces of the United Arab Emirates. A new national aircraft roundel was introduced using the colors of the UAE flag and became the standard identification marking for Emirati military aircraft.

During the following decades, the UAE Air Force developed from a relatively small regional force into one of the most modern air arms in the Middle East. French-built aircraft played an important role in this expansion, particularly the Mirage 2000, which became one of the best-known aircraft associated with Emirati military aviation.

The UAE later introduced the highly advanced F-16E/F Block 60 Desert Falcon, a version of the F-16 developed specifically for the Emirates. Transport, training, and rotary-wing aircraft have included the C-130 Hercules, C-17 Globemaster III, Hawk, MB-339, PC-21, AH-64 Apache, and CH-47 Chinook.

Although low-visibility versions of the national insignia are also used on some modern aircraft, the full-color green-white-black-red roundel remains one of the most recognizable symbols of UAE military aviation.
