Historical Information

Before unification, Yemen was divided between the Yemen Arab Republic in the north and the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen in the south. Their air forces developed along very different lines during the Cold War, with North Yemen receiving both Western and Soviet aircraft while South Yemen relied heavily on Soviet and Eastern Bloc equipment.

The two countries formally united on May 22, 1990, creating the Republic of Yemen. Their military organizations were subsequently combined, giving the new Yemeni Air Force an unusually diverse collection of aircraft from both former states.

The unified force inherited aircraft including the MiG-21, Su-22, F-5E/F Tiger II, C-130 Hercules, Mi-8, and other Soviet and Western types. This mixture reflected the very different international relationships maintained by the two Yemeni states before unification.

Later additions included the MiG-29, which became one of the most capable fighters to serve with the post-unification Yemeni Air Force.

The national aircraft marking adopted by unified Yemen drew heavily upon the aviation traditions and Pan-Arab colors already used in North Yemen, providing a common national identification for the combined force.
