Historical Information
Ottoman military aviation was established before World War I, with an organized air arm developing from 1911. Early aircraft used red markings featuring the Ottoman crescent and star, but during the war a very different national insignia became standard.
From approximately 1915 through 1918, Ottoman aircraft commonly carried a black square, outlined in white when needed for contrast. The simple geometric marking distinguished Ottoman aircraft from the German Iron Cross while remaining clearly recognizable on aircraft supplied or influenced by Germany.
The black square appeared on Ottoman aircraft serving in campaigns across the Middle East, including operations associated with Gallipoli, Palestine, Mesopotamia, the Caucasus, and the Arabian Peninsula. Ottoman aviation operated a mixture of German-designed aircraft including types from Albatros, Halberstadt, Rumpler, and Fokker.
For World War I wargamers and aviation modelers, the Ottoman black square is an essential marking for recreating the often-overlooked air campaigns fought over Gallipoli, Palestine, Mesopotamia, and the wider Ottoman Empire.
