Historical Information

In 1918, Turkish aviation briefly introduced a red-white-red roundel, but it was soon replaced by a distinctive red square outlined in white. This square marking remained the principal Turkish aircraft insignia for more than five decades and continued in use after the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in 1923.

The Turkish air arm developed substantially during the interwar period and World War II era. Its modern name, Türk Hava Kuvvetleri, was adopted in 1947. American military assistance after World War II accelerated modernization, and Turkey entered the jet age with aircraft such as the F-84 Thunderjet before joining NATO in 1952.

The red square marking therefore appeared on aircraft spanning several generations, including the P-47 Thunderbolt, C-47, F-84, F-86 Sabre, F-100 Super Sabre, F-102 Delta Dagger, and F-104 Starfighter. It remained in use until 1972, when Turkey reintroduced the red-white-red circular roundel still associated with the Turkish Air Force today.
