Historical Information
Following the 1963 Ba'athist coup, Syria adopted a new national flag based on the Pan-Arab colors of red, white, and black. Three green stars appeared in the white center band, and the corresponding flag design was adopted for Syrian military aircraft markings.
The marking coincided with a major period of expansion and modernization for the Syrian Air Force. Soviet assistance made Syria an increasingly important operator of MiG fighters and other Warsaw Pact equipment.
Aircraft carrying markings from this period included the MiG-17, MiG-19, MiG-21, Il-28, and various Soviet-built transports and helicopters.
These markings are particularly appropriate for aircraft involved in the Six-Day War of 1967, the War of Attrition period, and the years immediately preceding the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
In 1972, Syria adopted new national symbols as part of the Federation of Arab Republics, bringing this particular three-star fin-flash period to an end.
For Cold War and Arab-Israeli War wargamers, this three-star fin flash provides the historically appropriate Syrian tail marking for one of the most important periods in the development of the Syrian Air Force.
