Historical Information

Syria joined Egypt in 1958 to form the United Arab Republic (UAR). Aircraft markings were changed to reflect the new union, adopting a Pan-Arab red-white-black roundel incorporating green stars.

The political union between Egypt and Syria ended in 1961, after which Syria briefly returned to its earlier national markings. Additional changes followed during the 1960s and 1970s as Syria's national flag and political identity evolved.

A red-white-black roundel with two green stars became especially familiar after Syria readopted the corresponding national flag in 1980. This style remained associated with the Syrian Arab Air Force through 2024.

During these decades, the marking appeared on a large Soviet-designed aircraft inventory including the MiG-21, MiG-23, MiG-25, MiG-29, Su-20, Su-22, Su-24, and numerous helicopters and transport aircraft.

Because Syrian aircraft markings changed several times between 1959 and the twenty-first century, modelers should match the decal style to the particular aircraft and date being represented. The familiar two-star red-white-black marking is most strongly associated with the 1980–2024 Syrian Arab Air Force.

Following political changes beginning in late 2024, Syrian national aircraft markings changed again. This sheet therefore represents the historical Syrian markings shown on the decal sheet rather than the newest post-2024 insignia.
