The red star had been the principal Soviet aircraft identification marking since the early Soviet period. At the beginning of the German invasion in 1941, plain red stars were widely used on VVS aircraft. As the war progressed, contrasting black, white and eventually red-white-red border treatments appeared, but the unbordered red star remained an important early-war marking.
