Historical Information
The Royal Rhodesian Air Force retained a roundel strongly derived from RAF practice but adapted it with a distinctive single assegai emblem to give Rhodesian aircraft a recognizable national identity. This marking replaced the earlier federal insignia that had represented Southern Rhodesia, Northern Rhodesia, and Nyasaland together.
The 1960s were a major transition period for Rhodesian military aviation. Aircraft carrying this style included the Hawker Hunter, English Electric Canberra, de Havilland Vampire, Douglas Dakota, and Alouette III, as well as trainers and liaison aircraft. These types formed the core of the air force as the Rhodesian Bush War began to intensify.
In 1970, Rhodesia became a republic, the “Royal” prefix was removed from the air force name, and the RAF-style roundel was replaced by the green-and-white lion-and-tusk marking.
This marking is specific to the Royal Rhodesian Air Force period and should not be confused with the green-and-white lion-and-tusk roundel introduced in 1970. Period photographs are recommended for exact size and placement on individual aircraft.
