Historical Information

1-300 South Korea Air Force Bars 1951 to 2000

This decal set reproduces the classic Republic of Korea Air Force barred national insignia used from the Korean War era through the end of the twentieth century. The marking combines the red-and-blue Taegeuk national symbol with white horizontal bars and contrasting outlines in an American-influenced layout.

South Korea's air force expanded rapidly during the Korean War, operating alongside United Nations air forces and receiving large numbers of American aircraft. The barred roundel became a defining ROKAF marking and remained in widespread use for decades as the service transitioned from propeller aircraft to increasingly capable jet fighters.

The design can be seen across nearly the entire Cold War development of the ROKAF, though proportions and exact border treatments varied over time. It was replaced by a revised modern national insignia around 2000.

Representative Aircraft: F-51D Mustang, F-86 Sabre, F-5A/E, F-4D/E Phantom II, F-16, T-33, C-46, C-123 and other ROKAF aircraft.

For historically accurate placement, consult photographs of the specific aircraft and year because the size and details of the ROKAF barred insignia evolved during its long period of use.
