1-300 South African Fort Roundels Decals

$6.00Price

These 1-300 South African Air Force Fort Roundel decals reproduce the distinctive SAAF castle-and-springbok national marking associated with the Cold War and the early decades of the South African Border War. The emblem replaced the earlier circular springbok roundel and gave South African military aircraft an unmistakable national identity.

Decal Information

The sheet includes South African Fort Roundels markings suitable for use on 1-300 scale aircraft miniatures.

They are printed on clear-background waterslide decal paper. They need to be individually cut out. Apply over a properly prepared and gloss-coated model surface using normal waterslide-decal techniques.

Historical Information

The castle-and-springbok design was introduced in the late 1950s, as South Africa moved away from the earlier roundel format used during the Korean War era. The stylized castle became a broader South African Defence Force symbol, while the springbok remained the central aviation emblem.

This marking became closely associated with the SAAF during the expansion and modernization of the 1960s and 1970s. Aircraft carrying castle-and-springbok insignia included the Mirage III, Mirage F1, Blackburn Buccaneer, English Electric Canberra, Atlas Impala, C-130 Hercules, Alouette III, and Puma, among many other types.

The roundel was used during the period in which SAAF aircraft operated extensively in South West Africa/Namibia, Angola, and neighboring regions. Later variants, including lower-visibility forms and subsequent eagle-and-castle insignia, appeared as SAAF markings continued to evolve.

The castle-and-springbok marking should be distinguished from both the earlier circular springbok roundel and the later eagle-based SAAF insignia. Exact color, visibility, and placement could vary by aircraft and period, so reference photographs are recommended for a specific model.
