1-300 Somali Air Force Roundel Decals
These 1-300 Somali Air Force roundel decals reproduce the national aircraft marking associated with Somalia’s military aviation after independence. The simple star-based national identity became closely linked with Somali aircraft during the Cold War and the conflicts of the Horn of Africa.

Historical Information
Somalia became independent in 1960, and the existing aviation organization was reorganized as the Somali Air Force later that year. Early equipment included Western-built transports and trainers, but during the 1960s and 1970s Somalia developed increasingly close military ties with the Soviet Union.
That relationship transformed the air force into one of the more heavily equipped air arms in the region. Somali aircraft included MiG-17 and MiG-21 fighters, Il-28 bombers, transports, trainers, and helicopters. These aircraft played a major role during the 1977–1978 Ogaden War against Ethiopia.
The Somali national marking remained visually distinctive even as aircraft types and political relationships changed, making it a useful subject for both early independence and Cold War-era collections.
Somali aircraft markings and placement varied across Western- and Soviet-built aircraft. Period photographs are recommended when modeling a specific aircraft or unit, especially during the rapid expansion of the air force in the 1970s.
