Historical Information

Shark-mouth and shark-teeth designs became some of the most recognizable forms of military aircraft nose art during World War II. The markings combined an aggressive visual appearance with unit identity and crew personalization.

The Curtiss P-40 became especially famous for this type of artwork because its deep radiator intake provided a natural shape for a mouth and teeth design. Similar motifs appeared on other aircraft and in different theaters, with considerable variation in tooth shape, eye details, colors, and overall proportions.

Shark-mouth markings were not standardized across all aircraft or units. Period photographs should be used to select the most appropriate style and placement for a specific subject.
