1-300 Royal New Zealand Air Force WWII Roundels
This set represents Royal New Zealand Air Force national roundels used during World War II. RNZAF aircraft initially followed RAF marking practice, but Pacific operations led to red-free blue-and-white variations intended to prevent confusion with Japanese national markings.
New Zealand's wartime air force operated both within the wider Commonwealth system and independently across the Pacific. As the threat of mistaken identity became more serious, RNZAF aircraft in forward areas adopted modified roundels that removed or overpainted the red center while retaining blue and white recognition elements.
These markings were carried by fighters, bombers, patrol aircraft and transports operating from New Zealand and island bases across the South Pacific. Field modifications and local repainting created several recognizable variations.
