Historical Information

Bahrain established a military aviation capability in 1976 with the creation of the Bahrain Defence Force Air Wing. The early organization concentrated primarily on helicopter operations and used national flag markings rather than a conventional roundel.

A major change occurred in 1985, when Bahrain introduced its first fighter aircraft and adopted a new national roundel using the country's distinctive red and white national colors. The early fighter force centered on the Northrop F-5E/F Tiger II.

Bahrain subsequently selected the F-16 Fighting Falcon, becoming the first Persian Gulf nation to operate the type. The first Bahraini F-16C/D aircraft arrived around 1990 and quickly became the centerpiece of the country's combat aviation capability.

Bahraini F-16s and F-5s flew alongside coalition forces during the 1991 Gulf War, giving the young air force significant operational experience.

The service was officially renamed the Royal Bahraini Air Force in 2002. Its aviation inventory has also included AH-1 Cobra attack helicopters, UH-60 Black Hawks, Bell helicopters, training aircraft, and transport types.
