Historical Information

When the country declared itself a republic in March 1970, the prefix “Royal” was dropped from the air force name and a new national marking was introduced. The green-and-white roundel reflected Rhodesia’s national colors and became closely associated with the final decade of the Rhodesian Bush War.

The marking appeared on many of the best-known Rhodesian aircraft, including the Hawker Hunter, English Electric Canberra, de Havilland Vampire, Alouette III, Cessna 337 “Lynx,” and various transport and liaison aircraft. These aircraft were heavily employed in reconnaissance, strike, troop support, and counter-insurgency operations.

The roundel remained in use through the later Rhodesian period and into the short-lived Zimbabwe-Rhodesia transition before national aircraft markings changed after independence in 1980.

The 1970 roundel should not be confused with the earlier Royal Rhodesian Air Force marking, which retained an RAF-style form with an assegai emblem. Period photographs are recommended for exact placement and size on individual aircraft.
