Historical Context
The Vickers Wellington was one of the RAF's most important twin-engined bombers and a mainstay of Bomber Command during the opening years of the Second World War. Its distinctive geodetic structure gave the aircraft exceptional ability to absorb battle damage. No. 99 Squadron was the first RAF unit to convert to the Wellington before the war and flew the type on early bombing and leaflet-dropping operations over Germany.
