Historical Information

1-300 RAF Type B roundels for wings of medium to large bombers

These 1-300 RAF Type B bomber roundels reproduce the RAF's two-color red-and-blue Type B national insignia in larger sizes intended for the broad wing surfaces of medium to large WWII bombers. The Type B omitted the white ring of the earlier Type A, reducing contrast against camouflage while preserving clear national identification.

As the RAF adopted camouflage in the late 1930s, the Type B became increasingly important on upper wing surfaces. Its reduced-visibility red-and-blue design was especially well suited to bombers, where large, highly visible markings could compromise camouflage from above.

Throughout World War II, Type B upper-wing roundels remained common even as fuselage markings changed from Type A-1 to Type C.1. This means bomber aircraft frequently carried more than one roundel type at the same time depending on location on the airframe.

This sheet is particularly appropriate for aircraft such as the Handley Page Hampden, Armstrong Whitworth Whitley, Vickers Wellington, Bristol Beaufort, Bristol Blenheim, and similar medium-to-large RAF aircraft whose wing roundels were significantly larger than those used on fighters.

Roundel diameter varied between aircraft types and sometimes between marking directives, so matching the decal size to the aircraft and its historical photograph will produce the most convincing result.
