Historical Context
No. 218 (Gold Coast) Squadron became an important Short Stirling bomber unit, operating the type during the height of Bomber Command's night offensive before later converting to Lancasters. No. 51 Squadron is best remembered as a Whitley and Halifax bomber unit, but it also operated Stirling IV and V aircraft in the transport role near the end of the war and immediately afterward. Together, the markings provide two very different examples of RAF Stirling service.
