Historical Context
No. 15 Squadron converted to the Short Stirling in 1941 and flew the heavy bomber during major phases of the Bomber Command offensive before changing to Lancasters late in 1943. No. 620 Squadron formed in June 1943 with Stirlings and initially flew bombing and minelaying missions. Later that year it transferred to the airborne-forces role, where its Stirlings towed gliders and carried troops and supplies during operations including Overlord, Market Garden and Varsity.
