Historical Context

Nos. 74, 92 and 152 Squadrons were all Spitfire units engaged in the Battle of Britain. No. 74, the famous "Tiger Squadron," became one of Fighter Command's best-known units under South African ace Adolph "Sailor" Malan and fought from the heavily contested Hornchurch sector. No. 92 Squadron also saw intense action with Spitfires during 1940 and included a number of notable fighter pilots in its ranks. No. 152 Squadron joined the expanding Spitfire force and contributed to the defense of southern England during the battle.

These units illustrate the multinational character of Fighter Command, whose RAF squadrons included pilots from Britain, the Commonwealth and occupied European nations fighting together during the summer and autumn of 1940.
