1-300 RAF Spitfire Squadrons 65, 66, 72

This sheet contains 12 tactical markings for each squadron, including markings for both the left and right sides of the aircraft. They are sized to our Spitfire / Hurricane 3d prints at 1-300 scale.

Historical Context

Nos. 65, 66 and 72 Squadrons all flew Spitfires during the Battle of Britain. They formed part of Fighter Command's network of day-fighter squadrons defending Britain against German bomber formations and their Bf 109 and Bf 110 escorts. No. 65 Squadron operated from the vital Hornchurch sector during the opening stages of the battle, while Nos. 66 and 72 were also committed to the defense as Fighter Command shifted squadrons between sectors to replace losses and reinforce threatened areas.

The markings on this sheet are suited to the Spitfire Mk I era, when squadron code letters, individual aircraft letters and RAF roundels made each unit visually distinctive despite the standardized camouflage carried by Fighter Command aircraft.
