Historical Context
No. 103 Squadron was a long-serving Bomber Command unit that converted to the Lancaster during 1942 and took part in the growing strategic air offensive against Germany. No. 619 Squadron formed in April 1943 from personnel and aircraft drawn from No. 97 Squadron and operated Lancasters as part of No. 5 Group. Both units flew major operations over occupied Europe and Germany during the period when the Lancaster became the backbone of Britain's heavy-bomber force.
