Historical Context
No. 617 Squadron was formed at RAF Scampton in March 1943 for Operation Chastise, the celebrated Dams Raid of 16/17 May 1943 using Barnes Wallis's Upkeep bouncing bomb. The squadron later developed into a specialist precision-attack unit, using the 12,000 lb Tallboy and eventually the massive 22,000 lb Grand Slam earthquake bomb against hardened targets such as viaducts, submarine pens and other heavily protected structures.
