Historical Context
No. 617 Squadron was created specifically for Operation Chastise, the Dams Raid of 16/17 May 1943. Nineteen specially modified Lancasters attacked the Möhne, Eder and Sorpe dams using Barnes Wallis's Upkeep weapon, establishing the squadron's enduring Dambusters reputation. The unit later became a specialist precision-bombing force and employed Tallboy and Grand Slam earthquake bombs against heavily defended strategic targets during 1944 and 1945.
