Historical Context
No. 44 (Rhodesia) Squadron was the first RAF squadron to operate the Lancaster and helped introduce the type into front-line Bomber Command service. No. 115 Squadron also became an important Lancaster operator and had previously participated in trials of the Gee radio-navigation system, technology that became vital to Bomber Command's increasingly sophisticated night offensive. Together the two units represent the Lancaster's transition from a new heavy bomber into the RAF's principal strategic striking aircraft.
