Historical Information

Qatar's military aviation history began in 1967 with the establishment of an Air Wing within the Qatar Public Security Forces. Its earliest aircraft included helicopters, followed by several former Royal Air Force Hawker Hunter fighters that gave Qatar its first fixed-wing combat capability.

In 1974, the organization became the Qatar Emiri Air Force and adopted a new national aircraft marking incorporating maroon, gold, and white. This marking became the identifying insignia carried by Qatari military aircraft.

The QEAF expanded significantly during the late 1970s and 1980s. The Dassault/Dornier Alpha Jet provided training and light attack capability, while the Mirage F1 introduced a modern supersonic fighter capability. Qatar later operated the Mirage 2000-5, continuing its long association with French combat aircraft.

Qatari aircraft participated with coalition forces during the 1991 Gulf War, marking an important operational milestone for the relatively small air arm.

During the twenty-first century, Qatar dramatically expanded its air force with the acquisition of advanced aircraft including the Dassault Rafale, Eurofighter Typhoon, and Boeing F-15QA, supported by aircraft such as the C-17 Globemaster III, C-130J Hercules, PC-21, and AH-64E Apache.
