Historical Information

The Shenyang J-15, commonly known as the Flying Shark, is a twin-engine carrier-based fighter developed for Chinese naval aviation. The aircraft was developed for operations from China's growing aircraft-carrier force and incorporates the strengthened landing gear, arresting hook, folding wings, and other features required for carrier operations.

A J-15 successfully landed aboard the aircraft carrier Liaoning on November 23, 2012, an important milestone in the development of China's fixed-wing carrier aviation capability. Baseline J-15 aircraft have since operated from Liaoning and Shandong, both of which use ski-jump launches and arrested recoveries.

The J-15 family has continued to evolve. The newer J-15T was modified for catapult launch operations and incorporates changes including strengthened nose landing gear and updated systems for use with China's newer carrier aviation infrastructure. Aircraft markings, serials, and paint details can vary by airframe, production batch, carrier assignment, and time period, so period photographs should be used when matching decals to a specific aircraft.
