Historical Information

This set reproduces the national aircraft roundels used by the North Korean air arm. The design centers on the communist red star and uses contrasting national colors to create a highly visible identification marking associated with Korean People's Army Air Force aircraft.

North Korean military aviation developed rapidly after the establishment of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in 1948. Soviet aircraft and training formed the backbone of the early force, and the national insignia became familiar during the Korean War on MiG fighters, attack aircraft and transports.

The roundel remained an identifying feature of North Korean military aircraft through the Cold War and into the modern era, although size, color proportions and low-visibility treatment have varied by aircraft and period.

Representative Aircraft: Yak-9, Il-10, MiG-15, MiG-17, MiG-21, MiG-23, MiG-29, Su-25, An-2 and other North Korean aircraft.

Korean War photographs can show weathering and considerable variation in marking size and placement, so period reference images are recommended when modeling a specific North Korean aircraft.
