Historical Information
Shark-mouth and tooth markings are part of a much broader tradition of military aircraft nose art. Nose markings originally served practical identification purposes in some cases, but they also became a way for crews and units to create distinctive aircraft identities and morale symbols.
One of the best-known wartime shark-mouth associations is the Curtiss P-40, whose large radiator intake created a natural location for teeth and mouth artwork. Shark-mouth motifs continued to appear after World War II on later jet aircraft, becoming a recurring visual tradition rather than a marking tied to a single type or service.
Modern shark-mouth designs vary greatly in shape, color, size, and position. Reference photographs should therefore be used when matching a particular aircraft or unit.
