Historical Information

The Iron Cross has roots in the Prussian military tradition of the early nineteenth century, but its modern Bundeswehr use belongs to the postwar Federal Republic of Germany. The Bundeswehr was founded in 1955, and in 1956 the new armed forces adopted a stylized Iron Cross as their official national marking. On 1 October 1956, Federal President Theodor Heuss formally authorized a black cross with a white border for Bundeswehr aircraft and combat vehicles.

The marking quickly became one of the most recognizable features of West German and later unified German military equipment. It appeared on Cold War aircraft such as the F-84F Thunderstreak, F-86 Sabre, F-104G Starfighter, F-4F Phantom II, and Tornado, and continues on modern aircraft including the Eurofighter Typhoon, A400M Atlas, helicopters, and other Bundeswehr equipment. On Luftwaffe aircraft, the Iron Cross is normally carried on the fuselage, while German national colors are represented separately on the fin.

The Bundeswehr Iron Cross is a postwar marking and should not be confused with the WWII Balkenkreuz. For the most accurate miniature, reference photographs are recommended because size and exact placement changed between aircraft types, camouflage schemes, and service periods.
