Historical Information
1-300 Modern German Army HEER Iron Cross Markings Black & White
These 1-300 modern German Army HEER marking decals reproduce the black-and-white national and service markings used on Bundeswehr Army aviation and combat vehicles. The set is centered on the modern German Iron Cross, or Eisernes Kreuz, the distinctive national identification marking carried by Bundeswehr aircraft and combat vehicles.
The modern Bundeswehr was established in 1955 as the armed forces of the Federal Republic of Germany. When the new force developed its own national identification system, it deliberately revived the historic Iron Cross in a stylized form rather than adopting the straight-sided WWII-era Balkenkreuz. On 1 October 1956, Federal President Theodor Heuss formally authorized a black cross with a white border as the identification marking for Bundeswehr aircraft and combat vehicles.
For the Heer, the marking became closely associated with Army Aviation helicopters and other military vehicles throughout the Cold War and into the modern era. Depending on vehicle type, camouflage scheme, and period, black-and-white crosses and service markings could vary in size and placement. Army Aviation types carrying German national markings have included aircraft such as the Bell UH-1D, Bölkow Bo 105, CH-53, Eurocopter Tiger, and NH90, along with numerous support and utility vehicles.
The modern Bundeswehr Iron Cross should not be confused with the straight-armed Balkenkreuz used by the Luftwaffe during World War II. Although both draw on earlier German military symbolism, the postwar Bundeswehr marking was deliberately standardized as a stylized Iron Cross and remains an official identification marking of German military aircraft and combat vehicles.
