Historical Context
Prewar B-17 Flying Fortresses wore the early U.S. Army Air Corps national insignia and unit markings that predated the standardized wartime system. After the United States entered World War II, national markings changed quickly, including removal of the red center from the prewar star insignia during 1942. These earlier markings are ideal for portraying the formative years of the Flying Fortress before the familiar 1943 star-and-bar system became standard.
