Historical Context
Operation Tidal Wave on August 1, 1943 sent USAAF B-24 Liberators from North Africa on a daring low-level strike against the oil-refining complex around Ploesti, Romania. The attacking force included the 44th, 93rd, 98th, 376th and 389th Bomb Groups. The mission became one of the most famous—and costly—American heavy-bomber operations of the war, making the distinctive aircraft and group markings of the raid especially popular modeling subjects.
