Historical Information

Kuwait established an independent air force in 1961, the same year the country achieved full independence from Britain. Its national aircraft roundel incorporated the green, white, red, and black colors of the Kuwaiti flag.

The developing Kuwait Air Force initially relied heavily on British aircraft. Early jet types included the Jet Provost, Hawker Hunter, BAC Strikemaster, and the spectacular English Electric Lightning, which provided Kuwait with a supersonic interceptor capability.

During the 1970s, the force expanded with French and American equipment. The Mirage F1 became Kuwait's principal air-defense fighter, while the A-4KU Skyhawk provided a highly capable ground-attack aircraft.

The Kuwait Air Force's traditional roundel was prominently associated with these Cold War aircraft. During the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990, surviving Kuwaiti aircraft escaped to neighboring countries and continued operating with coalition forces. Some aircraft temporarily carried "Free Kuwait" identification in place of the normal roundel.

Following Kuwait's liberation in 1991, the air force reorganized around aircraft such as the F/A-18 Hornet. Full-size national roundels became much less common after the Gulf War, with the Kuwaiti national flag or fin flash generally serving as the principal national identification.
