Historical Information

Italy has used tricolor aircraft cockades in several forms since World War I. The marking disappeared during the Fascist period, when the Regia Aeronautica adopted the fasces as its principal aircraft insignia. Following the Italian Armistice of September 8, 1943, the tricolor roundel returned almost immediately on aircraft of the Italian Co-Belligerent Air Force, replacing Fascist-era symbols. The Italian Air Force notes that the restored cockade placed white between the red and green elements, establishing the basis for the national marking retained after World War II.

Following the establishment of the Italian Republic in 1946, the former Regia Aeronautica became the Aeronautica Militare. The tricolor roundel remained the primary Italian national aircraft insignia and has continued to appear on combat aircraft, transports, trainers, helicopters, and support aircraft throughout the Cold War and modern eras.

The standard modern marking uses a green center surrounded by white and a red outer ring. Although the basic colors have remained consistent, the proportions and size of the roundel have varied between aircraft types and periods. Modern Italian aircraft can also carry reduced-visibility versions of the national insignia when required by camouflage and operational considerations.

The tricolor roundel has appeared on generations of Italian military aircraft, including the Fiat G.91, F-84 Thunderjet, F-86 Sabre, F-104 Starfighter, AMX, Panavia Tornado, Aermacchi MB-326 and MB-339, Eurofighter Typhoon, and F-35 Lightning II, as well as numerous transports, trainers, helicopters, and other support aircraft.
