1-300 Italian Fascist Roundel – White Background

These 1-300 Italian Fascist Roundel decals reproduce the distinctive wing insignia carried by aircraft of the Regia Aeronautica, the Royal Italian Air Force, during the prewar and early World War II period. The marking consists of three black fasces displayed on a white circular background with a dark outer border, creating one of the most recognizable aircraft insignia associated with Fascist-era Italy.

During the Fascist period, the Regia Aeronautica adopted the fasces, the ancient Roman symbol incorporated into Benito Mussolini's Fascist movement, as its principal wing identification marking. Groups of three stylized fasces were arranged within a circular field and applied prominently to Italian military aircraft. Historical descriptions of early-war Regia Aeronautica markings identify the standard national wing insignia as three black fasces on a white circle bordered in black.

The white-background version was particularly characteristic of prewar and early-war Italian aircraft. The bright white field provided excellent recognition but also made the markings conspicuous against camouflage finishes. As wartime experience increased the emphasis on concealment, the Regia Aeronautica began moving away from the highly visible white background.

An official directive issued in October 1941 ordered that fasces insignia on the upper and lower wings of combat aircraft use a transparent background, allowing the aircraft's camouflage to show through. The order took effect on October 28, 1941, although the transition was not instantaneous and individual aircraft could retain earlier markings until repainted or replaced.

The white-background fasces roundel was therefore especially common on Italian aircraft during the opening campaigns of World War II, including operations in the Mediterranean, North Africa, East Africa, the Balkans, and the Battle of Britain period. It appeared on aircraft such as the Macchi C.200 Saetta, Fiat CR.42 Falco, Fiat G.50 Freccia, Savoia-Marchetti SM.79 Sparviero, Fiat BR.20, Cant Z.1007, and numerous reconnaissance, transport, and maritime aircraft.

An important detail of Regia Aeronautica wing markings was their orientation. The fasces insignia used on opposite wings were mirrored, so separate left- and right-wing versions were required for historically correct placement. The same basic fasces design remained in use until Italy's September 1943 Armistice, although the background and presentation changed during the war.
