These 1-300 Italian Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana flank and fin flash decals reproduce the distinctive Italian tricolor identification markings carried by aircraft of the Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana (ANR) during the final years of World War II. The design features the Italian green, white, and red tricolor surrounded by a distinctive yellow serrated border and was used on both the fuselage sides and tail of ANR aircraft.
The ANR was formed after the Italian Armistice of September 1943, when Italy was divided between the Allied-supported government in the south and the German-supported Italian Social Republic (Repubblica Sociale Italiana) in the north. The new Republican air force was organized in late 1943 and remained operational until the closing weeks of the war in April 1945. Its principal fighter mission was the interception of Allied bomber formations attacking northern Italy and targets in southern Germany.
With the collapse of the former Regia Aeronautica marking system, the ANR introduced new national insignia to distinguish its aircraft. One of the most characteristic was the yellow-bordered Italian tricolor flag applied to the fuselage and vertical tail. The fuselage version was generally larger, while a smaller version served as a fin flash. Historical references indicate that the green portion of the fuselage flag was normally positioned toward the front of the aircraft.
These markings were particularly associated with the ANR's fighter units and appeared on aircraft such as the Fiat G.55 Centauro, Macchi C.205 Veltro, and Messerschmitt Bf 109. The ANR also operated smaller numbers of other Italian and German aircraft. By 1944–45, many of its fighters carried camouflage patterns heavily influenced by contemporary Luftwaffe colors and schemes, making the bright Italian tricolor markings especially conspicuous against their dark camouflage.
Period aircraft photographs and profiles show considerable variation in the exact size and placement of the tricolor markings. On some aircraft, particularly the Macchi C.205 and Fiat G.55, large fuselage flags were carried immediately ahead of the tail, while smaller versions appeared on the fin. Later German-supplied Bf 109s could carry combinations of Italian and German markings depending on unit and date.
