Historical Information
Israeli aircraft markings were not completely standardized during the first months of the Israeli Air Force in 1948. Aircraft were acquired rapidly from a wide variety of foreign sources and often had to be prepared for combat with very little time available for standardized painting and maintenance procedures.
As a result, early Israeli national markings appeared in several variations. Differences could be seen in the shade of blue, thickness and proportions of the Star of David, diameter of the white field, and the presence or absence of an outer blue border.
These variations are especially useful for modelers representing the improvised character of the early Israeli Air Force. Aircraft entering service included transports and light aircraft as well as combat types such as the Avia S-199, Supermarine Spitfire, and North American P-51 Mustang.
As the Israeli Air Force matured, its national insignia became increasingly standardized around the familiar blue Star of David on a white circular field, with more consistent proportions and colors.
The Alternative #1 sheet is therefore particularly useful when a modeler wishes to represent an aircraft whose historical photograph shows a lighter blue star or a white roundel without the standard blue border.
