Historical Information
The Iraqi air arm was established in 1931 as the Royal Iraqi Air Force. Its traditional insignia developed around a distinctive triangular design that remained closely associated with Iraqi military aviation for much of the twentieth century.
The classic marking incorporates a green triangle with a stylized red Arabic letter "jim" and white detail. The Arabic character refers to jaysh, meaning army, and became a highly recognizable symbol on Iraqi military aircraft.
The marking appeared on aircraft during the monarchy and continued in modified forms after Iraq became a republic in 1958. Over the following decades it was carried by numerous Soviet, French, British, and other aircraft.
Iraqi combat aircraft included the Hawker Hunter, MiG-17, MiG-21, MiG-23, MiG-25, Su-20, Su-22, Su-24, and Mirage F1EQ, among many other types. These aircraft participated in conflicts including the Iran-Iraq War and the 1991 Gulf War.
After 2003, the reorganized Iraqi Air Force initially adopted different national markings. Beginning in 2019, the traditional triangular Iraqi insignia again appeared on some modern Iraqi aircraft, including transport and reconnaissance types.
