1-300 Japanese Hinomaru with White Border – XL Large for Emily Flying Boat
These 1-300 Japanese Hinomaru with White Border decals reproduce the large Japanese national aircraft insignia carried by Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service (IJNAS) aircraft during World War II. This sheet contains extra-large red Hinomaru with white outer borders, specifically sized for large aircraft such as the Kawanishi H8K “Emily” flying boat and other oversized Japanese bombers and patrol aircraft. The decals were test-sized to fit the H&R 1-300 scale Emily model.
The Hinomaru, meaning “circle of the sun,” was Japan’s primary military aircraft identification marking. Consisting of a red disc derived from the Japanese national flag, it appeared prominently on the wings and fuselage of Imperial Japanese Army and Navy aircraft throughout World War II.
The addition of a white border increased the contrast of the red Hinomaru when applied over darker camouflage. This became especially useful as Japanese naval aircraft increasingly adopted dark-green upper surfaces during the Pacific War. The Kawanishi H8K was typically finished with green upper surfaces and gray lower surfaces, making bordered national markings an appropriate option for aircraft whose individual markings and period photographs support their use.
The Kawanishi H8K, known to the Allies by the reporting name “Emily,” was one of Japan’s principal long-range four-engine flying boats. The U.S. Navy classified it as the Type 2 flying boat, while the Smithsonian describes the H8K as a Japanese flying boat used for naval reconnaissance and bombing missions.
The Emily’s combination of long range, heavy defensive armament, and ability to operate from remote island anchorages made it particularly valuable across the vast distances of the Pacific. H8Ks conducted long-range reconnaissance, maritime patrol, bombing, transport, and other naval missions.
One of the H8K’s most famous operations occurred on the night of March 3–4, 1942, when two H8K1 flying boats flew from the Marshall Islands, refueled from submarines at French Frigate Shoals, and continued to Hawaii. The mission, commonly called Operation K, became the second Japanese bombing raid against Pearl Harbor. Poor weather prevented accurate bombing or useful reconnaissance, but the operation demonstrated the extraordinary range of the new flying boat.
The H8K remained active throughout the Pacific War. U.S. Navy wartime photographs document Emilys operating from bases across the Central and Southwest Pacific, including aircraft encountered at Makin Atoll, the Central Pacific, and near the Ryukyu Islands.
Because the Emily was much larger than typical Japanese fighters and attack aircraft, its national insignia could also be considerably larger. Standard fighter-sized 1-300 Hinomaru decals may therefore appear undersized when used on an H8K. This XL Large sheet is designed specifically to provide the larger markings needed for the Emily and similarly sized aircraft.
