Historical Information

Greek military aviation dates to the Balkan Wars, when Greek aircraft first saw operational service in 1912–1913. During World War I, Greek Army and Naval aviation operated alongside French and British forces. A blue national roundel appeared after the war, and when the separate Army and Naval aviation branches were brought together into a unified air force around 1930–1931, the blue national marking became the basis of the modern Greek aircraft insignia.

The familiar Greek roundel uses the national colors of blue and white and has remained one of the most recognizable markings in European military aviation. Variations in shade and proportion have appeared over time, and modern combat aircraft may also carry subdued low-visibility versions.

Greek roundels have appeared on aircraft spanning World War II, the early Cold War, NATO service, and the modern era. Historically appropriate aircraft include the PZL P.24, Spitfire, F-84 Thunderjet, F-86 Sabre, F-104 Starfighter, F-4 Phantom II, Mirage F1, Mirage 2000, F-16 Fighting Falcon, and Rafale.
