These 1-300 German WWI Iron Cross Style #3 White Outline decals reproduce a later presentation of the Imperial German cross pattée, with the black national marking surrounded by a contrasting white outline rather than a large white background panel.
German military aircraft used the black cross pattée as their principal national marking through most of World War I. Early crosses were often painted over broad white fields, but the appearance changed as wartime marking practices evolved. By the later pre-1918 period, many aircraft carried crosses with a more restrained white border, reducing the amount of bright white surface while preserving recognition.
Cross shape, arm width, border thickness, and placement still varied considerably between aircraft, manufacturers, and units. This Style #3 White Outline sheet is intended for aircraft where photographs show a distinct white-edged cross pattée. In mid-April 1918, the German Air Service began replacing the cross pattée with the straight-sided Balkenkreuz.
White-outlined Iron Cross markings can be seen on a variety of later pre-April 1918 German aircraft, including Albatros D-series fighters, Pfalz fighters, Fokker Dr.I triplanes, DFW reconnaissance aircraft, Gotha bombers, and other Imperial German types, depending on the exact aircraft and date.
