Historical Information

1-300 German WWI Iron Cross Style #3 Thin Intersection

These 1-300 German WWI Iron Cross Style #3 – Thin Intersection decals reproduce a distinctive Imperial German cross pattée variation with a narrower center intersection. The sheet provides an alternative for modelers matching aircraft whose national markings differ from the broader Style #1 and Style #2 forms.

The black cross pattée, commonly referred to as the German “Iron Cross,” was the principal national aircraft marking used by the German air services through most of World War I. Although the overall form was recognizable, wartime photographs show numerous variations in the width and taper of the arms, center intersection, surrounding white field, border thickness, and overall proportions.

These variations resulted from changing instructions as well as differences in factory application, unit repainting, and the shape of individual aircraft surfaces. The Thin Intersection style represents one of these useful modeling variations. In mid-April 1918, the earlier cross pattée family began to be replaced by the straight-sided Balkenkreuz.

This marking style can be considered for Albatros, Pfalz, Fokker, Roland, DFW, Gotha, and other Imperial German aircraft from the pre-April 1918 period when photographs show the narrower center proportions represented on this sheet.

There was no single visual form appropriate to every German aircraft throughout the war. Compare period photographs carefully to the decal proportions when selecting the most accurate Iron Cross style for a specific aircraft.
