These 1-300 German WWI Iron Cross Style #3 Black Only decals reproduce the black portion of a German cross pattée national marking without a printed white field or border. This version is especially useful for aircraft with light-colored surfaces or for modelers who wish to paint the surrounding white field separately.
 
The black cross pattée, commonly called the “Iron Cross,” served as the principal German aircraft national marking through most of World War I. It was carried on wing surfaces and commonly appeared on the fuselage and tail. Early wartime applications showed considerable variation, with some crosses placed on broad white fields while others appeared with reduced surrounding white or directly against sufficiently contrasting surfaces.
 
As German marking instructions evolved, proportions and presentation became more standardized, but field and factory variations remained common. By the later war years, bordered forms were increasingly seen. In mid-April 1918, the straight-sided Balkenkreuz began replacing the earlier cross pattée on German military aircraft.
 
This black-only Style #3 is appropriate for aircraft where the model's finish provides the required contrast or where a separate painted white background is desired. Potential subjects include Albatros, Pfalz, Fokker, DFW, Roland, Gotha, and other Imperial German aircraft when supported by period references.
