These 1-300 German Luftwaffe Balkenkreuz decals reproduce a late-war national cross formed by a thin white outline. This low-area marking style is especially appropriate for darker camouflage schemes where a light outline remained visible while minimizing the amount of bright national insignia on the aircraft.
The Balkenkreuz originated in 1918 and returned as the principal national aircraft marking of the Luftwaffe. Throughout World War II it appeared on wing surfaces and fuselage sides in numerous forms, ranging from broad black-and-white crosses to increasingly simplified outline versions.
By the later war years, reduced-visibility and outline markings had become common on many frontline aircraft. Thin white forms were particularly useful against dark greens, grays, mottled camouflage, and night-fighter finishes. Factory practice and field repainting meant that no single late-war pattern covered every aircraft.
