Historical Information
1-300 Gabon – Nigeria – Sudan – Chad Air Force Roundels
These 1-300 African air force roundel decals provide national aircraft markings for Gabon, Nigeria, Sudan, and Chad on a single sheet. The four designs reflect the distinct national identities adopted by these air forces as independent African states developed their own military aviation organizations during the Cold War era.
All four countries emerged from colonial rule with very different political and military relationships. Their air forces consequently operated a wide mixture of French, British, American, Soviet, Chinese, and other aircraft, while national roundels replaced the colonial-era insignia previously associated with European powers.
During the African conflicts of the 1960s through the 1980s, these markings could be seen on aircraft used for training, transport, reconnaissance, ground attack, and air defense. Representative types included aircraft such as MiG-17s and MiG-21s in Nigerian and Sudanese service, Fouga Magisters and Mirage-family aircraft in Gabonese service, and a variety of transports, trainers, and light combat aircraft in Chad.
Because each country changed markings and equipment at different times, this sheet is especially useful for building a varied collection of post-colonial African air forces and regional conflict aircraft.
The exact appearance and placement of national markings varied by aircraft type and period, particularly as imported aircraft entered service from several different suppliers. Period photographs are recommended when matching a specific aircraft to a specific year.
